Aida Merlano is a Colombian politician who served as a senator in the Colombian Congress. She gained notoriety in October 2019 when she made a daring escape from prison by allegedly using a rope to climb down from a window during a medical appointment at a dental clinic. This escape sparked controversy and a nationwide manhunt to recapture her.
Merlano was initially arrested in 2018 on charges of electoral fraud and conspiracy in connection with her 2018 reelection campaign. She was later sentenced to 15 years in prison for her crimes.
Despite her escape, Merlano was eventually recaptured in Venezuela in January 2020 and extradited back to Colombia to serve out her sentence. Her escape and subsequent capture have brought attention to the issues of corruption and political scandal in Colombian politics.
